Lifetime Lab, with our interactive exhibit area, our Steam Centre, playground and historical location at the Old City Waterworks, is a great venue for children. Schools groups can avail of Classroom Workshops or take a Tour of Lifetime Lab.
primary Science Classroom WorkshopsUnder a unique collaboration between Cork City Council and the Professional Development Service for Teachers (PDST), a qualified teacher heads up the educational activities at the Lifetime Lab Schools’ Resource Centre offering activity based primary science workshops on a daily basis.
Schools participate in hands-on science investigations and learn about topics such as Energy, Electricity & Magnetism, Forces, Materials, Rocks & Soils, the Senses and more. Our primary science workshops focus on the skills, concept development and content objectives of the SESE curricula in the design of the workshops and is mindful that activities modeled in the science workshop represent feasible classroom practice.
School Tours
School Tours of Lifetime Lab are facilitated by helpful and friendly staff. A one hour tour includes time at the interactive exhibition where children will be entertained and stimulated while learning about energy, water, waste and a whole range of other environmental issues. In the Steam Centre, they will also get an opportunity to appreciate the technology used in the past to supply water to Cork city. Children can let off their own brand of steam in the playground and sensory garden before departure.
Many local children are regular visitors to the Lifetime Lab Science Club which takes place after school hours in the Schools’ Resource Centre. Science Club allows children with a curiosity for science to try their hands at all kinds of fun investigations in a small group of 10-12 others, under the stewardship of an Education Officer.
Talk, travelling exhibitions, competitions and activities which co-ordinate with national events such as Science week, Energy Awareness Week and Heritage Week will occur throughout the year. We look forward to schools being regular visitors to Lifetime Lab.
