At a ceremony at Dublin Castle recently, Lifetime Lab received a public service excellence award from An Taoiseach, Mr. Bertie Ahern T.D. for the innovative schools science programme.
Commenting at the awards, Mr.Ahern recognised that a lot of important initiatives and ongoing improvements are being made in the Public Service, "I wanted to hear those stories, reward and regonise the projects that have made a real difference, share the learning points and promote examples of best practice accross the whole system". This year's projects submitted for consideration were far greater in number and diversity than heretofore. The projects that were in receipt of the Public Service Excellence Award 2008 represented organisations from across the Public Service, the Health Sector, the Justice Sector, Local Authorities, Central Civil Service Departments and wider State Agencies. Each of these award winners were selected as examples of innovation providing genuine benefits by way of better service provision and delivery of improved administration.

The award also recognises the commitment by both Cork City Council and the Department of Education and Science in promoting the uptake of science subjects in schools and universities, a corner-stone of Ireland's knowledge based economy. Michael O’Brien, project manager of Lifetime Lab, was thrilled to receive the award adding “We perceive Lifetime Lab as an extra classroom for every school in the city and county, a science nursury for institutions whose high level graduates ensure that Cork has a well educated and highly skilled workforce long into the future”.
