On May 23rd Lifetime Lab will host the annual award ceremony of Reuseton schools competition. Now in its 2nd year, winning students from schools all over Cork will receive prizes for taking part in the competition.
“REUSETON” is a make-believe Irish town on the Web inhabited by the Green children. The Greens entertain and encourage children to learn about their environment and to recognise the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling.
Based around the characters in “Reuseton” the competition has four categories.
Creative Writing - Cartoon Strip - Design and Creativity - Scientific Investigation.
Each category has a First Prize of €400 and Second Prize of €200, with a Special Schools Prize fund of €600
The competition is organised by Cork County Federation Muintir na Tíre and is funded by the Department of the Environment through Cork County Council and Cork City Council
At the launch in September, Mayor of Cork County, Councillor John O’Shea encouraged all of the 317 schools from around the county to participate in the competition which he said was a novel way for children to learn about their environment.
Cork City Lord Mayor Councillor Michael Ahern said the ‘Reuseton’ Project is an imaginative concept by the use of interactive materials. This project makes a significant contribution in raising awareness among schoolchildren of the importance of caring for the environment and showing them how they can look after it.
Both agreed that the competition demonstrated how the City and County are working together to educate young people about the options they can choose to safeguard our environment.
