Sept 17th and 18th City Hall Cork
The association of the study of Peak Oil and Gas (ASPO) is to hold its 6th International Conference in Cork City Hall on 17th and 18th September. The conference titled “Time to React” seeks to highlight the global issue of gas and oil supply, the nature and extent of the world’s dependence on oil and gas and the risks associated with both. Over 300 delegates will hear the views of international experts such as Dr. Colin Campbell founder of ASPO, Dr. James Schlesinger former first secretary of energy in the United States, award winning scientist and Greenpeace campaigner Jeremy Leggett along with government ministers and other international experts and economists.
Dr. Colin Campbell reminds us that Ireland will certainly be one of the countries most affected by oil and gas supply failing to meet demand, with over 70% of our electricity forecast to be generated from natural gas under a business as usual scenario. The conference will look at the world’s oil and gas in the areas of supply, demand, risk and security while discussing the steps necessary to prepare for the future scarcity of oil and gas and the alternatives available. One alternative “the nuclear option” is sure to cause controversy with pro and anti nuclear views represented at the conference.

Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Development Michael Martin stated “Ironically Ireland may well be one of the countries which will be most affected by oil and gas supply failing to meet demand” and added “I look forward to participating in an event which places such importance on the subject that is becoming ever prominent on a national as well as an international basis”
Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr. Donal Counihan said “Cork City Council is delighted that ASPO have chosen to host the event in Cork and believes the conference is particularly relevant to the city as the City Council is involved in a numerous alternative energy initiatives that are consistent with the theme of the conference”.
