Cork City Council was shortlisted for the Engineers Ireland Innovative Company of the Year award. The nomination was given in response to the City Councils use of 100% Irish produced renewable fuels in some of its vehicle Fleet. The Council was the first Fleet operator in Ireland to use these new fuels based on the rapeseed oil crop. The project is lead by the Plant and Machinery Department and involves thirteen drivers and vehicles that use the fuel. The fuel known as PPO or Pure Plant Oil is much more environmentally friendly than diesel and reduces the emission of Green House Gases (GHG’s) to the atmosphere. PPO is the least polluting of all the bio fuels.

The award ceremony took place on Friday the 08 December at Engineers Ireland HQ in Ballsbridge Dublin. The purpose of the award ceremony is to highlight and promote creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship among Irish people and businesses. Certificates were presented to all finalists by John Gowan the President of Engineers Ireland.
