Cork Heritage Open Day Saturday 18th August
Key Event Information
As a special event for Cork Heritage Open Day and National Heritage Week, on Saturday August 18th the team of Old Cork Waterworks will provide guided tours of the impressive Victorian Architecture, and the steam engine and boiler rooms.
Discover a lesser told story, a behind-the-scenes secret: yet an essential ingredient to the prosperity of Cork City’s rapidly growing population in Victorian times. Arriving at the Old Cork Waterworks on the banks of the River Lee, you find handsome red sandstone and limestone buildings and a towering chimney: monuments to that same Victorian civic pride that left architectural legacies of Cork City. The four accessible buildings surrounding a cobbled courtyard overlooking the river date to Sir John Benson's 19th Century Cork City water supply scheme, although water was extracted from the area as far back as the 1760’s. Tours will be available every 30 mins from 11.00am to 3.30pm.
